Creative fatigue is the drop in an ad’s or post’s performance that happens when the same people have seen the same creative too many times, so click-through rate falls and cost per result rises while targeting and offer stay the same. On TikTok it shows up as rising frequency next to falling click-through rate. The fix is new creative, not more budget.
Key takeaways
- It is a creative problem, so the fix is a new hook, opening or format.
- Measure frequency and click-through rate together, against the ad’s first days.
- Organic posts fatigue too: a format your audience has seen stops pulling views.
Why does creative fatigue matter for brands on TikTok?
The organic feed is built to avoid repetition. In 2020 TikTok said its For You feed generally won’t show two videos in a row made with the same sound or by the same creator and doesn’t recommend content a viewer has already seen. A format posted on repeat works against that.
TikTok treats fatigue as routine. Its Smart Creative tool observes an ad group’s most differentiated videos for 3 to 5 days on no more than 10% of its budget, then pauses any showing signs of fatigue and swaps in videos from a waiting list.
How do you measure creative fatigue?
TikTok Ads Manager defines frequency as the average number of times each user saw an ad over a given period.
- Frequency = impressions ÷ reach
- CTR decline = (baseline CTR minus current CTR) ÷ baseline CTR, baseline being the ad’s first three days
| Signal | What fatigue looks like | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency | Climbing week over week | TikTok Ads Manager |
| Click-through rate | Falling against the ad’s first days | TikTok Ads Manager |
| Cost per result | Rising while budget and targeting stay put | TikTok Ads Manager |
| Organic views | A format landing below your account’s median | TikTok Studio analytics |
Set your own trigger before launch, for example a 25% CTR decline while frequency rises, and refresh when it trips.
What does creative fatigue look like in practice?
Say a skincare ad opens at a 1.2% CTR over three days with a frequency of 1.4. By day ten, frequency is 2.8 and CTR is 0.8%, a 33% decline (0.4 ÷ 1.2), and cost per purchase has climbed. The offer did not change, so the team keeps the body and tests three new hooks instead of raising the budget.
If results fell because the offer, landing page or targeting changed, new creative won’t fix it. More on spotting and fixing it: TikTok creative fatigue.
