TikTok slideshow (also called a Photo Mode post) is the everyday name for a TikTok photo post: a set of still images, usually with text on each slide and a sound underneath, that plays one after another and that viewers can swipe through at their own pace. TikTok allows up to 35 photos in one post (as of October 2026). Brands use them because they need no filming, so new hooks are cheap to test.
Key takeaways
- TikTok treats a slideshow as a photo post, not a video.
- No shoot and no edit, so a brand can test a new angle every day.
- Studies disagree on whether slideshows or videos engage better. Test both.
Why do TikTok slideshows matter for brands?
No camera. A fresh hook means new words on a slide, not a new shoot, so slideshows are the workhorse of faceless content.
Whether they beat video is open. In a Fanpage Karma analysis of almost 700,000 TikTok and Instagram posts (January to May 2025), TikTok carousels had an engagement rate more than 81% higher than videos, with shares about a third lower. Buffer’s March 2026 analysis found the reverse: a 3.39% median engagement rate for videos against 1.92% for carousels and photo posts.
One rule catches brands out: TikTok says businesses cannot use the general music library commercially and should use the Commercial Music Library, a pre-cleared library of 1 million songs (as of October 2026).
How is a TikTok slideshow different from a video?
TikTok announced Photo Mode in October 2022 as carousel posts of still images that “automatically display one after another.” Don’t confuse it with TikTok’s 2020 photo slideshow, which played images as a video.
| Slideshow (photo post) | Video | |
|---|---|---|
| Viewer control | Swipe at their own pace | Plays through |
| What you need | Images, words, a sound | Footage and an edit |
| Effort for a new version | Swap the text or images | Reshoot or re-edit |
| Best for | Lists, tips, comparisons | Demos, talking heads, trends |
| Paid version | Carousel Ads; standard carousels support Spark Ads | In-Feed ads or Spark Ads |
How do you measure a TikTok slideshow?
Score slideshows like videos so the formats compare, then judge each post against your account median:
- Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100
- Format lift = slideshows’ median engagement rate ÷ videos’ median engagement rate
If your slideshows sit at a 2.5% median and your videos at 2.0%, the format lift is 1.25.
What does a brand TikTok slideshow look like?
A cold brew brand might post five slides:
- “I tested 3 ways to make cold brew so you don’t have to”
- Mason jar overnight: cheap, a bit muddy
- French press: easy to strain, but bitter
- Concentrate packs: the one I still use
- “Which one are you trying first?”
Say it gets 12,000 views and 800 interactions: 800 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 6.7%. Against a 4% account median, that hook won, so the next version tests a new first slide on the same payoff. More formats to try: TikTok slideshow ideas.
