To turn an organic TikTok into a Spark Ad, pick a public post that already beats your account’s usual numbers, connect it to TikTok Ads Manager (by linking your TikTok account, or with an authorization code from the creator who posted it), and choose that post as the creative in a new campaign. Every like, comment, share and follow the ad earns stays on the original post (TikTok Ads Help Center). Budget at least TikTok’s minimum (as of October 2026, an ad group daily budget above $20, plus a campaign budget above $50 if you set one, per the TikTok Ads Help Center), test three to five winners at once, and scale the one with the lowest cost per result.
Key takeaways
- There are three ways in: link a TikTok account (yours, or a creator’s via Business Center); paste a creator’s post code, valid 7, 30, 60 or 365 days; or push a new post from Ads Manager, which goes up on the linked profile in private mode after ad review (TikTok Ads Help Center).
- Lock the caption before you authorize a post you pull in: TikTok does not let you edit it afterward (TikTok Ads Help Center).
- Choose posts that beat your own baseline on watch time and comments, not the ones with the biggest view count.
What is a Spark Ad, and why boost a post you already have?
A Spark Ad is a TikTok ad that runs as a post on a real TikTok account, yours or a creator’s, usually an organic post that is already live. Viewers can follow the account, open the sound page or visit the profile, as on any organic post (TikTok Ads Help Center). TikTok’s completion-rate numbers for the format are in our Spark Ads glossary entry.
A TikTok analysis of 2024 to 2025 brand ads found ads posted to a creator’s account had a 59% higher engagement rate than those that were not, which is the case for running Spark Ads from a creator’s handle (TikTok for Business). It is TikTok measuring itself, so weigh it accordingly.
The practical case is stronger: an organic post is a free creative test. If it held viewers and pulled comments with zero spend, it already beat your median, which is more evidence than most ad creative has on day one. That is why testing hooks organically before paid ads and Spark Ads belong in the same workflow.
When does an organic TikTok qualify for a Spark Ad?
Is it worth boosting?
- It beats your own median. Compare it with your last 20 to 30 posts, not someone else’s viral account. Three times your median views with above-median watch time is a real candidate.
- People stay past the opening. Retention in the first seconds matters more than total views. If the hook is weak, rework it before you pay to show it.
- Comments show intent. “Where do I get this” and “does it work for oily skin” are worth more than laughing emojis, and the ad carries those comments with it.
- The product appears, and nothing has expired. A post that never shows what you sell, or pushes a dead trend or ended offer, buys views and no customers.
Will TikTok accept it?
| Check | What TikTok says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Videos up to 10 minutes can be sparked (source) | Pick a shorter cut if needed |
| Visibility | A private video becomes public once it runs (source); a creator’s post shared by code must already be public (source) | Only boost posts you are happy to show publicly |
| Post type | Story videos, duet carousels and posts that tag multiple posts are refused (source) | Use a standard feed post |
| Guidelines | Organic posts that were banned are rejected in Ads Manager too (source) | Check the post is not restricted |
| Music | Businesses should use the Commercial Music Library (source) | If the winner used another sound, check with legal or rebuild it on a cleared track |
| Disclosure | Content promoting a brand needs the commercial content disclosure setting on (source) | Turn it on before you boost, including on creator posts |
| AI content | AI-generated or significantly AI-edited media needs the AIGC label or a clear disclaimer, or the ad is rejected or restricted (source) | Keep the AI label on, or add a disclaimer. More in TikTok’s AI content rules |
Photo posts look eligible, though TikTok does not name them outright: its error list refuses duet carousels but no other photo posts (TikTok Ads Help Center), its Spark Ads captions feature covers the Carousel format (TikTok Ads Help Center), and Standard Carousel ads support Spark Ads (TikTok Ads Help Center). Check the post appears in the TikTok posts tab before you plan budget around it.
How do you get a Spark Ads authorization code?
An authorization code (TikTok also calls it a post code or video code) lets an ad account use one specific post. You usually need one for a creator’s post (a creator can also authorize their whole account through Business Center). Your own posts usually come in by linking the account (next section).
The post’s owner generates it in the TikTok app (TikTok Ads Help Center):
- Allow authorized posts on the account (under Settings and privacy, then Privacy, or Creator tools).
- Open the post, tap the three dots, then tap Ad settings.
- Agree to the advertising content terms and turn on the Ad authorization toggle.
- Generate a code and choose how long it lasts: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days.
- Tap Copy code and send it to the advertiser.
Pick the duration on purpose. If the authorization ends before the ad’s scheduled end, Ads Manager flags it (error 900010), and an expired code (error 4025) needs the creator to extend it (TikTok Ads Help Center). For your own posts, 365 days saves rework. For paid creator deals, put the duration in the agreement: TikTok pitches custom durations as a way to keep costs down (TikTok Ads Help Center). Budget for the access too: Influee’s April 2025 rates guide puts whitelisting or Spark Ads access at about 30% of the creator’s base rate per month (Influee). More in what UGC costs per video.
Duets and Stitches need a code from both creators (TikTok Ads Help Center), and TikTok can still refuse some posts that involve several people (TikTok Ads Help Center).
How do you set up a Spark Ad in TikTok Ads Manager?
TikTok gives you three ways to source the post (TikTok Ads Help Center):
- Linked account. Link your TikTok account to the ad account in Business Center (Accounts, TikTok accounts, View, Linked accounts, Link accounts). You need Admin access; its posts then appear during setup (TikTok Ads Help Center).
- Code (pull). Paste a creator’s authorization code.
- Push. Upload a creative in Ads Manager and push it to a linked account. It goes up in private mode after ad review and you make it public in the app, or turn on TikTok Ads Only mode so it runs only as an ad (TikTok Ads Help Center).
For a manual campaign:
- In Ads Manager, click +Create under Campaign and choose an objective. In auction buying, Spark Ads support Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community Interaction, App Promotion, Conversions, Lead Generation and Sales (TikTok Ads Help Center).
- Set the ad group: budget, audience, schedule.
- In Ad creatives, click + Add videos or images, open the TikTok posts tab, and pick a linked-account post or click Add post to paste up to 20 codes. Check the authorization period under each post.
- Add ad details, call to action and destination, then click Publish all.
How much do Spark Ads cost, and what budget should you start with?
As of October 2026, an ad group’s daily budget must be above $20, and a campaign budget, if you set one, must be above $50 (TikTok Ads Help Center). TikTok’s budget FAQ suggests leaving the campaign budget at No Limit (TikTok Ads Help Center). A lifetime ad group budget must cover $20 a day, so 31 days needs $620.
A sensible first test: one campaign and one ad group at $60 a day, holding your three to five organic winners, for seven days ($420). At a $40 target cost per purchase, that buys about one and a half purchases a day across all the ads, too few to pick a winner on purchases alone, so judge round one on click-through rate and add-to-carts, or raise the budget.
When something works, scale slowly: TikTok says to raise budgets by no more than 40% per change in the learning phase, 30% after it, and no more often than every two days (TikTok Ads Help Center).
How should you test Spark Ads against each other?
- Start from organic winners. Shortlist three to five posts that cleared the bar above.
- Round one. Put them in one ad group with a broad audience and your real objective. Leave it alone for five to seven days.
- Read cost per result first, then early retention, click-through rate and comment quality. Pause any ad that has spent two to three times your target cost per result with nothing to show.
- Round two. Make three to five new hooks on the winner’s body and test them against it, as new organic posts or pushed posts set to run only as ads.
- Refresh before it tires. Watch frequency and rising costs, and have the next round ready. Our guide to TikTok creative fatigue covers the signs.
To learn whether social proof matters to your buyers, run one video as a Spark Ad and as a regular uploaded ad, with equal budgets.
Should you use Promote, a Spark Ad or a regular ad?
| Option | Where you set it up | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promote | Inside the TikTok app or on the web | A quick boost from a ready-made pack or a custom promotion (source) | Fewer controls; you must be 18 or older |
| Spark Ad, your post | TikTok Ads Manager | Scaling a proven post with real objectives and reporting | A private post is made public once it runs; caption is locked |
| Spark Ad, creator post | Ads Manager plus the creator’s code | Running ads from a creator’s handle | Code expires; disclosure and rights to agree |
| Regular In-Feed ad | TikTok Ads Manager, uploaded file | Ads where every tap should go to your landing page, not a profile (source) | Engagement does not build up on an organic post |
Promote is fine for one post and a small spend. For several winners, Pixel-tracked conversion goals or finer targeting, move to Ads Manager (TikTok Ads Help Center).
Where does Relay fit?
Spark Ads need posts worth boosting, and you usually find those by posting often and watching what holds attention. That is the part Relay helps with. Relay makes slideshows and videos for your brand based on formats getting views in your niche, you swipe to approve, and Relay sends each approved post to your TikTok inbox on its day. You open the draft, add a caption if it is a video, choose who can see it and tap Post; that is also where you turn on the content disclosure toggle, which matters if you boost it later, and the AI-generated content setting if the post uses realistic AI imagery. Every post’s views sit in one place, and when one does well, Relay makes new takes of it. Videos are the simplest posts to boost; check a slideshow winner appears in the TikTok posts tab first. Relay owns the posts it makes and licenses them to you while your plan is paid. Posts already live can stay up after you cancel, but boosts and Spark Ads must stop within 5 days.
As of October 2026, Starter is $25 for the first month, then $49 a month for 40 posts made and 20 sent to your TikTok. On the Scale plan, you get up to 150 posts a month in total, split between your TikTok and the creator network, where creators in Relay’s network of 50,000 post your approved drafts from their own accounts.
Relay’s self-serve product does not run or manage ad spend; you set up Spark Ads in your own TikTok Ads Manager. For ad creative, Relay’s managed UGC ads service makes UGC ads from the creator network at about $5 a creative (as of October 2026), starting with a free 15-minute call and 5 UGC ads on Relay. It makes the creative, not the media buying: a media buyer or agency runs the account.
When is Relay the wrong tool for Spark Ads?
- You already have winners and need media buying. Relay’s self-serve product does not run ad spend, so you need someone running Ads Manager, not more posts.
- You need Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. Relay’s self-serve product works with TikTok only.
- Your plan is mostly boosting established creators. TikTok One, TikTok’s own creator platform, may suit you better; TikTok says projects there turn on the commercial content disclosure automatically (TikTok Ads Help Center).
- You post one polished video a month. At that volume, a good editor is enough.
